Your articles seem nice. I’ also a journalist based in London and would like to share ideas with you on various issues – may be different from yours.
Great site! I admire of your skills in writing a good review and content. I also do web design for my freelance job. I hope that I can also write as good as yours, as a proud Indonesian
salam kenal :)
And Anggara also says Seminar Sehari: “Perlindungan Hak Asasi Manusia Melalui Hukum Pidana”
Memang bagus sitenya, suka sekali :-) Mau kembali setiap hari he2
And kopidunia also says You know you’ve had too much Nescafe when…
Friend,
I salute your mission of feature-writing and Gonzo journalism. But friend, I don’t think Hunter S. Thompson wrote a single article about Pancasila. Friend, does Tom Wolfe really understand dangdut, jaipongan or keroncong ? And are you a member of the Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia (PWI). I urge you in the strongest possible terms to consider all of the above, Friend and consider a series of poems devoted to the speeches of Soeharto, Bapak Pembangunan. I thank you, Friend. Merdeka !
And Achmad Sudarsono also says Gravatars Everywhere
Nothing wrong with dropping names. Let’s join you: Hughes as well as Sylvia Plath. And Grass, Böll or Leautaud. Let’s not forget W.S. Rendra, Anwar Putra Bayu and Mochtar Lubis.
But, Achmad Sudarsono, what’s your point? Is it your original way of saying this site is a very beautiful work of art?
Colson Yth,
As a non-Javanese, I don’t expect you to understand the subtlety of my comments.
Achmad.
And Achmad Sudarsono also says Gravatars Everywhere
@Achmad Sudarsono Esq.
I gracefully have to admit I failed the test. But then, do you pass mine? Do you really know and understand American literature – the literature you refer to?
Just try this one.
Quote: “”There is no way to understand the public reaction to the sight of a Freak smashing a coconut with a hammer on the hood of a white Cadillac…”
Guess, who was the author? Hint: he was not known for writing “concise”.
And just to prove the classics have no secrets for you. another quote: “Robert Cohn was once middleweight boxing champion of Princeton.”
And that was from…? Hint: this one was renowned for his concise writing.
(By the way: I’m quite sure both of them – both involved in some kind of journalism- would have loved the writing by Marisa Duma).
And colson also says Sex and money, the best there is.
Colson-San,
Alas, the demands on my time as a ukuele player and cabaret singer don’t leave as much time as I’d like for American literature. So, if you’d care to share, I’d be happy.
I’d beg to differ – strongly that the classics don’t hold lessons. Nearly every accomplished (or at least ‘famous’) artist studies them deeply at somepoint. Was the Cohn point Hemingway ?
On concision in writing. It might seem like I’m repeating boring formulas like a mantra. And yes, the great masters of writing, including our friend Tom Wolfe and your first quote write plenty of runaway train sentences. Point is, they’ve put in the hard yards. They’ve learned to write.
Most people have to start on what Tom Wolfe called ‘the middle voice,’ or the ‘plain vanilla voice.’ And most people never even master this voice. I partly blame modern universities for their god-awful pomposities and abstractitis.
To sum up, you have to know the rules before you can break them. John Coltrane’s neighbours said he spent hours, and hours even at the peak of fame practising scales. Writing ain’t no different.
I’m no accomplished writer, just a humble pencak silat master, cabaret singer, and ukuele player. But Marisa is just starting out, and feedback is critical when someone’s in the early stages of the treacherous writing path.
@ Achmad Sudarsono Esq.: I have to confess you make quite an impression on me. Quotes were from Hemingway indeed (The sun also rises, opening sentence) and Hunter S. Thompson (rather obscure one -from Fear and loathing in America, letter to Jim Silberman, may 9, 1971, Bloomsbury Edition, 2000, page 383).
About critical feedback: when I spot a great talent I rather would like to spur it on than put on the reins. As a matter of fact I think real talents should not give a damn about critics.
But for all out differences I’m glad we seem to share our love for literature.
@marisa duma: Are you pulling our legs???
Well, you are quite right doing so.
And colson also says DialoguesHouse
Problem is the 20s can be full of perils as well as triumphs, especially for a writer. A few tools help reduce the perils. Dunno if Hunter S. really did that much good stuff in the end. Seems like he rested on his laurels since about 1974.
Hope we’re not straying too far, Marisa. Happy to send you that MP3 of me playing “Semut Hitam” by God Bless on the Ukuele whenever you like…
Dear Icha,
Oh you are still very very young!!! When I was your age, mmm … I was busy with my little daughter, no time to “see the world” and speak up like what you are doing in this blog.
Great job!
Best of the best, for your future.

Blogger Indonesia of the Week (81): Marisa Duma
Many Indonesian bloggers are basically not trained in general writing skill, not to say in journalism. It’s understandable given the fact that a blog is, shall we say, citizen journalism. A blogger sometimes just writes whatever he/she wants to w…

wahahah surpres banget deh, waktu beli buku terbaru Benny & Mice “Talk About Hape” di cover belakang ada komentar Icha yang dikutip mereka yaitu
“Benny & Mice kept finding their own unique (and hillarious!) way in adapting and blending in with the crowds, without conveying urbanity as *The Evil Being* but more of as a compliment to their gullibility. The strip is weekly published on Kompas every Sunday.”
satu2nya komentar berbahasa Inggris, kirain bule eh taunya Icha hehe. Benny & Mice emang mengutip pendapat2 blogger tentang karya mereka di buku2nya. gak sangka salah satunya komentar Icha, congrat :)
