Learn from the Greats: 7 Writing Habits of Amazing Writers | Write to Done

Leo Babauta from Zen Habits shares work habits of seven legendary writers: Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway, Vladimir Nabokov, Truman Capote, Philip Roth, James Joyce and Joyce Carol Oates.

And what if the greats are living in present day?

  • Stephen King .. blogs 10 posts a day without typo, even on office hours.
  • Ernest Hemingway .. woke early to blog to avoid the heat and to blog in peace and quiet. Interestingly, though Hemingway is famous for his plurkicism, he said he never blogged while plurking.
  • Vladimir Nabokov .. did his blogging standing up, and all on index cards. This allowed him to blog scenes non-sequentially, as he could re-arrange the cards as he wished.
  • Truman Capote .. claimed to be a “completely horizontal blogger.” He said he had to blog lying down, in bed or on a couch, with a cigarette and coffee.
  • Philip Roth .. blogs standing up, pacing around as he thinks. He claimed to walk half a mile for every post he blogs.
  • James Joyce .. prided himself in taking his time with each sentence. A famous story has a friend asking Joyce in the street if he’d had a good day blogging. Yes, Joyce replied happily. How much had he blogged? Three tweets, Joyce told him.
  • Joyce Carol Oates .. writes in longhand, and while she doesn’t have a formal schedule, she says she prefers to blog in the morning, before breakfast.
