Where are you, Einstein?

Dad (Physics Engineering, ITB, Class 1972) told me to look for you. He was a bit pissed off with how the world is today. He didn’t express it but I could sense it.
I said,
It’s different now, Dad. Geeks are famous now, they’re like social rock stars, tycoons, idols, politicians even. They don’t do einstein-ish stuffs anymore.
That’s why they’re recognized more as professionals — not scientists. They blog, plurk, twit and all of those cool Web 2.0 thingies. They call themselves technology evangelists and preach only the obvious. They shop for sleek and stylish gadgets just as how you prefer yours to be strong and sturdy. And the rest of brilliant people, young men and women of science, they’re still here, trust me. Hundreds of them are on the internet and perhaps even more.
Thing is, they are striving so hard on not doing einstein-ish stuffs, Dad. They just don’t want to get hurt, that’s all. They know how alone it is to be an Einstein. And alone is not how the world works now, see. It’s social, social, social. Mediocre-at-best is good. Individual brilliance is evil.
Remember when I was still a party girl, hustling and bustling with my friends and all? Yes, that’s how the world is today.
Isn’t that awesome? Dad?
But I didn’t say it. Hasn’t reality been a mere illusion — albeit a very persistent one?
Dad continues his chores. Stain and grease on his hands.
Yet another attempt to discover the Einstein that once resided in him, and the world.

Anyhow, I just noticed that thejournal’s Plurk karma is going 30 in less than a week.
Yee-haw! Buddha will be proud.
A very interesting point of view I must say, “being an Einstein is lonely”
But truth of the matter is, all kinds of scientists (those dealing with atomic physics or those dealing with the nature of war) needs to some extent - at one point or other - a cut-off from the world that they live in in order for them to ‘produce’ something.
You are absolutely right, these days scientists from all walks of life are becoming more ’socialized’ and ‘globalized’, and for the case of Indonesia, becoming more ‘celebrity-zed’ (if such a word indeed exist).
“The search for knowledge and truth cannot be found in a void room of ivory tower, nor will they ever be found without someone being in the tower.”

After doing some research, I’m pretty sure that Einstein never said that about computers, after all, he died in 1955.
